overview > forest management

Although selectively logged in its history, Balam Jungle’s forests are a remarkably resilient ecotype, surviving and flourishing through these exploits. Actually, after protecting and preserving the property for over 10 years now, our recent assessments show that the forest and other vegetation patterns have never been severely damaged and the area is with regards to its extraordinary richness of flora and fauna, one of the last important coastal forest refuges of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Realizing the great responsibility our team has to preserve the natural treasures of our environment, it became our duty to gain true insight into our forests’ ecological dynamics by establishing a Forest Management Plan that can ensure the sustainability of our resources.

For our Forest Management Plan to be effective and well-balanced in assessing the impact and benefits of our forests, we knew it was important to address the following aspects.

  • Environment - Forest management standards that take into account issues such as biodiversity, water quality, soil erosion and wildlife habitat will ensure ecologically sound forest management practices.
  • Society - Standards that incorporate indigenous peoples' rights, public access and the social impacts of forestry on local communities will ensure that social benefits to human communities are maximized.
  • Sustainable Economics - Standards that emphasize sustained yield and species diversity ensure long-term economic viability and thus a profitable and stable future for the forest industry.

Knowing the devastation that can occur due to the loss of our planet's forests, we wanted to be a part of the solution. Adhering to forest certification standards, our Forest Management Plan serves as a critical guide that ensures the sustainability of our harvesting operation while optimizing the regeneration of impacted areas through the incorporation of plantation and reforestation programs.During the wet season, our personally employed forest rangers are active replanting trees, ensuring that our timberland continues to flourish while also patrolling and protecting the property from would-be poachers and hunters.

The overall aim for our Plan is, of course, to create direction for our timber operation, but it’s also to remain flexible and ever evolving with the knowledge and expertise we obtain from research and consultation with well respected professionals.
